About Abuja

Abuja is a city of approximately 1,769 square kilometers in size, and since 1991, serves as the capital of Nigeria; Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria, served in the same capacity as the country’s capital long before the country’s independence from Britain in 1960. As of 2017 Abuja’s metropolitan population was estimated to be 9 million people, with an annual growth rate of 35%, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the world. All national embassies in Nigeria have headquarters in Abuja; ECOWAS, and various United Nation’s bodies also have head-offices in the city.

Nigeria, with a population of over 210 million people, is the most populous country in Africa, and the 7th largest in the world. Its youth population is the third largest in the world next to India and China. Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups and as many languages, however, three dominant ethnic groups, the Igbos, Hausas, and Yorubas visibly shape the cultural, socio-economic, and political landscape of the country. English is the primary language of communication. The country’s major sources of revenue are oil exports, and financial services.
